An Ounce of Genius
An Ounce of Genius
Ageing is a
natural and gradual process that takes place in early adulthood. Our bodily
functions begin to gradually decline. Traditionally the age of 65 has been ear
marked as the beginning of old age. As we age, our brain begins to shrink in volume.
Memory decline also occurs with ageing an brain activation becomes more
bilateral for memory tasks.
The Brain and Ageing
At least 25 studies have
demonstrated that DNA damage accumulates with age in the mammalian brain. Ageing is
a major risk factor for most common neurodegenerative diseases, including mild cognitive impairment, dementias including Alzheimer's disease, cerebrovascular disease, Parkinson's
disease and Lou Gehrig's disease. In addition to the structural changes that the brain
incurs with age, the ageing process also entails a broad range of biochemical
changes. More specifically, neurons communicate with each other via specialized
chemical messengers called neurotransmitters. Several studies have identified a number of these
neurotransmitters, as well as their receptors, that exhibit a marked alteration
in different regions of the brain as part of the normal ageing process. Many
older adults notice a decline in their attentional abilities. Studies
done, have found that memory functions, more specifically those associated with
the medial
temporal lobe are especially vulnerable to
age-related decline. Changes in performance on verbal tasks, as well as
the location, extent, and signal intensity of BOLD signal
changes measured with functional MRI, vary in predictable patterns with age.
The fight against ageing
Cera-Q
termed – the anti-ageing supplement derived from a silkworm. After exploring
all-natural compounds that fight brain ageing, behold the silkworm! Cera-Q is a
protein hydrolysate extracted from fibroin, the major protein in silkworm
cocoons. Traditional medicine has prescribed silkworm fibroin for centuries to
improve health and longevity. This protein’s high glycine and alanine content,
paired with a unique molecular structure, offers the unique advantage of binding
to and preventing the build-up of amyloid plaque in the human brain. It can
also increase glucose uptake to the brain which provides energy and support
during both simple and complex cognitive tasks. Multiple studies on humans,
animals, and cells verify the potency and efficacy as an anti-ageing compound
for the brain, not to mention the beneficial effect in lowering cholesterol and
cardiovascular effects.
L-Theanine is
an amino acid found most commonly in tea leaves and in small amounts in Bay
Bolete mushrooms. It can be found in both green and black tea. It also promotes
relaxation without drowsiness. Many people take L-Theanine to help ease stress
and unwind. A natural alternative to relieve anxiety, stress and increase your
focus. Some research suggests that L-Theanine may improve the function of the
body’s immune system. One study published in the Journal Beverages founds that
L-Theanine could help decrease the incidence of upper respiratory tract
infections. Another study found that L-Theanine could help improve inflammation
on the intestinal tract. However, more research is needed to confirm and expand
on these findings. The authors of a 2011 study suggest that L-Theanine found in
the Bay Bolete mushroom works together to improve the effectiveness of certain chemotherapy
drugs. Because of these promising findings, the same biotechnology researchers
expect that L-Theanine could also help improve chemotherapy’s ability to fight
cancer. L-Theanine may be beneficial for those who experience increased blood
pressure in stressful situations. Some research indicates that L-Theanine could
be beneficial for a good night’s sleep. L-Theanine may also help people with (ADHD) sleep better.
