How do I choose joy? I know that I want it. I don't want to be sad, angry, frustrated, hopeless, etc. Do I need to say it out loud, "I'm choosing joy"? Do I need to repeat "choose joy, choose joy, choose joy" throughout the day, every day, until I feel it? Choosing to feel one emotion over another isn't easy. Generally we are at the mercy of our emotions, unable to control them. They are on autopilot and take us for a ride, whether we like it or not. Telling a sad person to cheer up, you’re most likely to hear, “I can’t" or "you not going through what I am.” Telling an angry person calm down and let it go, and you may be the recipient of a outburst of anger. Even though we’re each probably "guilty" of encouraging someone to be happy at one time or another, we know it’s not that simple. If it was, there wouldn't be any grieving in the world. Despite all of this, it is possible to be joyful in difficult times. Choosing joy is like c...

Life is getting more expensive

Image
It's Not Just You, Life Is *Actually* Getting More Expensive How far does your money go at the moment? Have you started to wonder why you don’t seem to have that much of it left at the end of the month? Do you ever google ‘online banking conspiracies and/or scams’? Have you ever thought that your bank account might be ‘leaking’? If the answer to any of the above is yes, you might not actually be as bad with money as you think – life really is getting more expensive and, in real terms, your earnings almost definitely can’t keep up. Newly   released official figures show that average wages are struggling to keep up with the rising cost of goods for the first time in two and a half years . As the pound remains weak and Britain embarks on trying to get a Brexit deal, real people are feeling the pinch in real time. Inflation is currently at 2.3% if you look at the consumer prices index (CPI). Food prices have risen at the fastest pace in three years, up 1.2% from las...

Take ownership and design a better life

Image
Forget Job Security - Take ownership and design a better life The biggest mistake that you can make is to believe that you are working for somebody else. Job security is gone. The driving force of a career must come from the individual. Remember:  Jobs are owned by the company, you own your career! — Earl Nightingale For better or worse, the days of having a steady income at a 9–5 job for decades are dying. Entrepreneurs and freelancers understand this more than anyone. Creating your own career naturally leads to defining your own day to day activities and creating a workable, scalable plan for your retirement years. Because those later years depend so heavily on the financial decisions you make now, your career choices carry a heavy weight. Richie Norton recommends you ponder over these questions and self-reflect to change how you get paid in life. — When do you get up in the morning? Why? — When do you come home? Why? — If you had a different job…you...

Job security is disappearing

Image
Job Security Is Disappearing -- What Does It Mean For You? When I was a kid, the adults around me would get a job and keep the job for ten or twenty years. It was very unusual for someone to change jobs. Then corporations started shedding layers of management. Jobs started to move offshore, and outsourcing became popular. When I entered the working world it was still common to keep the same job for decades, but even when you didn't hold a job that long you could expect to stay employed for three to five years. Things kept changing. More and more people would take a job with the hope and expectation of staying in the job for awhile, but then somebody in a conference room many time zones away would make a decision and the job would disappear. It became commonplace to take a job, learn the job and then have the rug pulled out from under you. Now, we never know how long a new job is going to last. These days it is hard to find a working person who hasn't been ...

Plan B

The importance of a Plan B in business!

Image
The importance of a Plan B in business! A politically charged, but historically documented term, the idea of having a 'plan B' or a back-up plan is often times viewed as being prepared for the worst-case scenario. But in the world of business, where entrepreneurs deal with daily struggles and risk it all just to succeed, having a plan B might also be considered a weakness or seen as a lack of commitment to a current plan.  It's important to think about crafting your plan B in a strategic, intentional, and sometimes in multiple ways.  Just as great, not second-rate Having a contingency plan is nothing new to entrepreneurs, especially those willing to take great risks for the chance at even greater gains. Dating back to the Civil War, the art of crafting a "plan B" required developing a contingency plan in case the ideal plan of attach did not work out. Like soldiers going into war, entrepreneurs, have the opportunity to plan in advance, taking into acco...

George - The 140 Year old Lobster

Image
George - The 140 Year old Lobster George  (hatched approximately 1869) is an  American lobster  owned briefly by the City Crab and Seafood restaurant in  New York City . Captured in December 2008, he was released back into the wild in January 2009. George weighed 20 pounds (9.1 kg), and has an estimated age of 140 years. George was captured off the coast of  Newfoundland  in December 2008,  and sold to the City Crab and Seafood restaurant in  Park Avenue South  for $100.  He arrived at the restaurant on New Year's Eve.  Keith Valenti, the restaurant manager, said that "We never intended him to be sold, just draw attention to the restaurant, and he did." Instead, the lobster had been "sitting in the restaurant's tank and acting as a sort of mascot";  Valenti explained that "we bought a big lobster, started taking pictures with kids and it worked out real well".  George was given his name by a young patron of the...
